Boho - A whimsical and eclectic style you can truly call your own

Updated: Jan 30, 2023

It’s fair to say Bohemian Styling was one of the most popular home trends of 2019, and some designers would say its ‘finally’ on its way out. But, in my view its timeless as it’s a creative, completely eclectic, evolving representation of you. In fact when it comes to Bohemian styling there is no concern for modern sensibilities or current trends.

The term ‘Bohemian’ originally referred to Roma Gypsies and inspires images of vibrant colour, freedom and a carefree lifestyle. While boho rooms have certain similarities in that they are always eclectic and share similar features, no two rooms are ever the same and this uniqueness makes it personal and completely individualistic to the stylist. It’s this carefree aesthetic that so differentiates Boho from any other décor style.

Embracing a lack of structure, Bohemian styling opts for mix and mismatch layers of pattern, texture and colour. The core of bohemian decorating is that its personal and relaxed, typically not styled for any other person's pleasure but purely for your own. Often rule breaking and unconventional, filling homes with whimsical, eclectic, life.

While there are no rules when it comes to bohemian decorating, warm earthy colours are common, as are jewel tones. Think pink, gold, yellow and orange, greens, red, deep browns, and greys, purple and electric blue or turquoise. Combining and layering colours is what makes this style so unique.

Or perhaps for a more modern ‘urban-boho’ twist you might prefer to stick with a more natural palette of white, creams, beiges and greys, warming the room with natural wood elements and building layers with texture and patterns.

Feel free to mix patterns and textures, “more is often more” when it comes to boho and don't be afraid to use styles that would not necessarily go together in a conventional way. Natural, basic materials like burlap and sisal can be combined with silk and chenille. Think batik, mandala, paisley or patchwork and layer beautiful fabrics on your bed, couch or curtains. The materials should have a slightly worn look; not damaged, but not shiny and new either.

Fringe, crochet, and macramé are signature boho embellishments, floor cushions, and throw-rugs combine to create a laid back, globally-inspired hangout. Fill your room with interesting collectables and use dyed textiles and patterns from around the world to give your space a travelled feel.

Furniture collected over time, second-hand and vintage items are right at home in a Bohemian room. Each piece of furniture should be special and tell a story. Accessorise with vintage rugs, string lights, a touch of cane. Boho mixes beautifully with traditional so hunt out those special vintage statement pieces and antiques. Have fun exploring our store and choose each piece individually. If you love it, it will fit right in.

A plush velvet sofa in ruby red or emerald green scattered with a mix of cushions will certainly make a bohemian statement but streamlined and straight backed chairs will not fit in here. Relaxed, eclectic comfort are the keys here where your guests will want to ‘sit and stay’ awhile.

Unify your boho look with understated ambient lighting to complete a calm and welcoming feel. Decorate with lanterns, multiple, candles, and floor and table lamps.

Bring a natural world appeal to this style, by bringing your room to life with ferns and hanging plants in macrame hangers. Not only do they create vibrancy in a room, but they also improve air quality, so the more the merrier.

If you are like me and have less than a green thumb, succulents with their wide range of colours and textures are an eye-catching option, needing little more than a sunny spot and occasional watering. Philodendron and peace lilies are also very forgiving and withstand a variety of light and temperature levels.

Finally, pull together your boho room with family heirlooms, handmade items, and objects from your travels. Accessories add the personal touch, so feature what you love and is special to you: tapestries, vintage bottles, mismatched china, antiques and old books, a collection of elephants; it’s all down to you and your boho personality.

Keep in mind that while bohemian style does tend to be eclectic, it can still be glamorous, so do not be afraid to try out a chunky gold framed mirror or ornate chandelier. The only rule is that every item chosen for your room should be a personal, individual reflection of yourself.

No rules, embrace carefree, release your whimsical and have some fun!
